Importing Classes

How does one import classes from one drawing into another? Seems like it should be as easy as importing symbols or hatches via the Resource Browser.

If you import objects with classes then those classes will be imported (unless there are naming conflicts). Perhaps you might consider setting up an office template which contains all of your typical layers, classes, etc...

Well I typically just copy and paste an object that has the class assigned to it but that means opening the file, finding the objects, etc. Obtuse. I do have atemplate with all the classes, but inevitably I create new ones that don't get into the template. There MUST be a way to import the class without having to go get the object.

Nope, there's not...at least not that I know of...use Peter's methods...they work.

there is the reference method for classes you want linked to another file but there is also another way that imports just the class definition for when you don't want the class referenced.

open the create new class dialogue

click the 'import...'

navigate to the file were the class you want is located

select the class

import it, done.

There are also template files (.sta) with classes set up, in the Libraries > Defaults > Standards folder. Vectorworks lists the template file's contents in the New Class dialog. You can make a new template with your own classes saved to the Standards folder, where you can always access it.

Tobias I knew there had to be a sensible way! That's money, thank you. And there is the added benefit that you are only shown the classes that are not already in the document to prevent overwriting. Yahoo!
