moving reference files

Recommended Posts

hi all, we're using reference files on VW 8.5.2, (mac), up to now all the files were kept on a desktop G4, and all other networked macs would open the files from this locaton. We now have a dedicated server, however when we copy all the files over to the server and open from there, it tries to locate the referenced files from the old location. Any one know of a solution/ workaround, other than manually re-linking the files (theres alot of them!). Confusingly, when we move the referenced files into different folders WITHIN the desktop G4, it manages to locate them.

Thanks

We have seen this for years with people that take files home. When moving a file or folder from one server/computer to another, VectorWorks will look for the original on the original server/computer. When a file is opened, it will try to connect to the server (even if you moved the reference file to the computer that you are now working off of). There is no cure that we have found other than actually re-referencing the files (when at home, you can refuse to update). We also archive our drawing files after major issues, and you have to be careful to archive the *copy* not the original or all the files will continually look for the original. VectorWorks obviously does not look for a file name but a code within the file; thus renaming files does not affect references either.

So perhaps a very valuable -- and I maintain, 'simple' -- feature to implement is to decide if the reference is stored by file ID code or by name, with the option to include or not to include the file path.

Come to think of it, why does the layer reference not work on some sort of ID code, if there is some identification of that sort, instead of relying solely on the layer's name?

I ask because, in the course of setting up the plan sheets, the manner in which wg referencing is approached and applied changes, sometimes necessitating a change of layer names in the base plans and thus rebuilding the reference links in the sheet drawings.
