Editable data in custom symbols?

Recommended Posts

I realize this must be a very basic question, but I couldn't find any leads with the regular search tools.

How do I create my own custom symbol with some text that is editable through the data tab of the Object Info Palette? I know it's possible, and I have found ways to do this by taking one that somebody else made, and changing it to my liking, but really, I'd like to know how it's SUPPOSED to be done.

Thanks,

Noemie

1. Create a Record Format with fields for the text you want to go with the symbol.

2. Create/insert the symbol in the drawing.

3. Go to the Data Pane of the OIP and assign the Record to the symbol instance.

4. Put a placeholder piece of text where you want it by the symbol.

5. Select the text and symbol.

6. Choose the Link Text to Record menu command.

7. Choose the Record and Field to be linked to that text block.

8 Repeat Steps 4 to 7 as necessary.

For more information look up Link Text to Record in the help system.

Yes! This worked! One little flaw in your help is that you forgot to mention that the Link Text to Record command happens within the symbol editing, but I figured that out thanks to the Link Text to Record help section, which is what I had been looking for all along. Why I could not find this after multiple searches, I don't know.

Thanks Pat!
