Christiaan
Hi everyone, I'm writing to invite you to contribute to a new website aimed at collaboratively documenting UK-related feature requests and bugs, the first of which is the localisation of building terminology: http://needleandmortar.com/wiki/Vectorworks_vs_UK_building_terminology The website is a wiki so anyone can edit it. Please feel free to contribute. At a recent meeting some UK users, including myself, were asked by Robert Anderson to provide a list of UK building terminology to help them localise the UK version of VW. I've set up the wiki specifically to facilitate this but may expand its scope to cover more later. Kind regards, Christiaan Quote Link to comment
Bryan G.
Christiaan, this site is great, good luck with it. I will find it useful to follow some of the comments you gents are saying on the boards. All that being said french fries are still french fries. JK Quote Link to comment
Guest Wes Gardner
Yep, wattle and daub all the way baby! No seriously, thank you Christiaan for developing the start of what can be helpful to all. For my own edification, I'd like to have a better understanding of wall types, dampproofing, etc. and the terminology associated used throughout the world. Quote Link to comment
Christiaan
Thanks guys. And glad to hear french fries are still french fries. Quote Link to comment
Christiaan
We're getting close to the point now that we can start submitting data to Nemetschek, so we welcome and encourage review by others. Quote Link to comment
Christiaan
It's not just terminology we're dealing with. See for example http://needleandmortar.com/wiki/UK_localization_of_Door_Object Correct terminology does help though. It lowers the cognitive load required to use the interface. Quote Link to comment
Chris D
I very much doubt that terminology helps. The Texan/Marylandian McMansions have little in common with the rest of the world. Industry practices are the important thing. Having contributed to the comments on the door tool, I can now stand back and see just how far the tool is from being useful to UK architects. No wonder we hardly use any of the PIO objects that VW provides... Quote Link to comment
Christiaan
What you are after is a set of UK-specific tools, not NemV "localisation". Ideally yes. Realistically no, at least not in the next version or three. Quote Link to comment
Christiaan
The following have been submitted to NV for anyone interested: http://needleandmortar.com/wiki/UK_localisation_of_building_terminology http://needleandmortar.com/wiki/UK_localisation_of_Door_Object http://needleandmortar.com/wiki/UK_localisation_of_Window_Object Quote Link to comment
Dieter @ DWorks
Christiaan, although I understand your frustration about the use of these tools, I don't think it's NV responsibility to do the localisation. It's your distributer that need to do that and it's they that need to be spoken to about it. And NV need all the time they have to fix all those irritating bugs in the new version. Christiaan
Hiya, there's an explanation on the homepage about this. For whatever reason the UK localisation is actually done by NV. This all came out of a meeting we had with the UK distributor and NV in September last year. Quote Link to comment
Christiaan
Another reason?by the way?to contribute if you have time, because it will affect the version that ships to you too. Quote Link to comment
Dieter @ DWorks
Our local distributer, Design Express, adds it's own windows and doors to the program, and so much more. They also translate it, wich I hate. And we can't get the english version. Now that I know the situation, I really think you do a good job with that page, but I still think that NV doing it seems the other way around. Quote Link to comment
Christiaan
NemV supplying more and more tools as non-localisable C++ ones makes it very difficult for a distributor to do any localisation ... Plain translation is not localisation. Well it will be interesting to see what they do to the window and door tools as a result of this project. I don't expect them to be translated into UK english/usage. Then they'd be shipping a UK version to everyone. They'll have to make them localisable. I just hope they have the resources to do this for v2012, otherwise we'll have to wait yet another year to get going with BIM. From the meeting we had with NV we were asked to provide standard sizes for things like furniture and fittings, as a kind of low fruit strategy for localising the UK install. But it was the architects that prioritised the localisation of the window and door tools. Without localised versions of these tools we're trapped in the UK. Quote Link to comment
Christiaan
Nonsense. A distributor worth his salt can create truly local tools. I'm not talking about what's possible. I'm talking about what's foreseeable. Quote Link to comment
Christiaan
We just need it done. How it gets done we couldn't give two hoots. Quote Link to comment
Christiaan
Not so, the U.S. gets free localisation. Edit: In any case it's a matter for CU and NV. I don't know what deal they have. All they tell me is that NV does the UK localisation. Note that NV already localises VW for the UK. This is not a new thing.
