Single File Server Solution

VincentCuclair

Question

OK people, now it is time to join the 'competition' and develop a single file server solution even in VWs!

Even though I have always liked the multi file referencing setup, it is an unavoidable development that has many advantages and will prove invaluable, especially now that the demand for sharing 3D data (among the diff disciplines) becomes increasingly larger and at the same time projects (and therefore files) are becoming increasingly more complex and the coordination thereof more and more important.

Having the possibility of gathering all this information into a single oversee-able and manageable file is a great asset especially in larger multiuser projects, in office but even more unavoidable in coordination with external parties, not to mention increasing development in and demands on energy usage and other demands concerned with environmental development within the building industry.

Revit have just implemented a system like Archicad's BIM server: http://www.aecbytes.com/buildingthefuture/2010/RevitServer_CEA.html

This means that both of the competing BIM programs in Revit and Archicad are now single file solutions with server based collaboration Teamwork protocols.

One can but hope that NV have similar plans for Vectorworks so its users can have the same level of Teamwork flexibility and capability.

'Single file' is inaccurate and can be confusing. I think the more appropriate term would be 'central file' solution. Our office is practically 'Revit-based', and I can not imagine a large project stored in a single file especially if you're talking about multiple buildings. Possible if you really want to but it could potentially cause some stability and memory issues on your hardware as well as coordination problems. We use linked Revit and Autocad files all the time. Forget structural. Have you seen how big a mechanical 3d model looks like? Believe me, you don't want to include that when you share your model with anyone else in the team. Mike, what your linked article discusses is the inability of Revit to share a project beyond the local network and how worksharing works.

You are of course quite right Eli, that is not the essence of the wish, what we need is a (server based) solution that makes working in a group on the same project possible and the coordination and management there-of simple, clear and flexible. That means being able to make changes and additions, locally or remotely and then be able to easily see what has changed and choose what changes/additions should be applied to the main server file(s).
