billtheia
Hi all. I'm having trouble with the window sills in the VW PIO. I enter the correct dimensions for a wood window sill but the results are not correct. I get extra faces and gaps (see attached pics.) Am I doing something incorrect? Can someone out there please help? Thanks. Quote Link to comment
VincentCuclair
I also have hit upon strange behavior in the window tool..... http://techboard.vectorworks.net/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Main=29761&Number=145540#Post145540 Quote Link to comment
Jershaun
These are some of the reasons I mentioned in other threads that the pio system in vectorworks should be replaced to something more modern. The pio's (including the window and door tools) are set according to other people's standards and if I want to do something that suits me and according to my non-american standards, then it becomes a huge problem. If Nemetschek Vectorworks want's to truly be known as a company that serves international users, not just Americans, then the American pio's should not be forced onto international users. Also, it's because of these problems that I don't use these tools therefore for me, vw isn't a BIM tool. Sorry I couldn't be of help. Quote Link to comment
billtheia
The current PIO doesn't even serve american users. I have no idea why the window sill works the way that it does - I've never seen a window like that. Quote Link to comment
VincentCuclair
OK I'll submit a bug report for my issue...... Quote Link to comment
billtheia
This appears to still be a problem in VW2011. Am I the only person who has an issue with this? Is anyone out there getting correct results out of the sills in the window PIO? Am I missing some setting somewhere? I'd really like to be able to model simple window sills using the built-in window PIO. Quote Link to comment
CipesDesign
Hi Bill, I just tinkered around a little and I cannot make the sill behave. There is always a gap (as you have shown) where the trim does not meet the sill as expected. What's truly odd is that in the window Settings Preview, the trim *does* meet the sill as expected... Now that's what I call a bug (or three). If this hasn't yet been filed I would be happy to do so. Just let me know. Quote Link to comment
billtheia
Looking closely, it appears that the PIO draws a "jamb" at the bottom of the window and then places the sill below that. I have no idea if this has been submitted as a bug but I'd love it if you'd file one. This problem has existed, at least, since VW2008. It would be great if VW would spend a man-hour or two and fix this darn thing. Quote Link to comment
billtheia
Thanks, Peter. Quote Link to comment
CipesDesign
No problem. There are couple other window/trim oddities I will address as well. Hopefully a fix will be forthcoming! Quote Link to comment
Cadplan Architecture
Hi, is this the type of sill you want? AJ Quote Link to comment
CipesDesign
Yes, but a) it needs to be inserted into a wall and b) it needs trim. If you can get it to do all of that would you please attach a screenshot of the Settings. Thanks! Quote Link to comment
billtheia
Hi, is this the type of sill you want? AJ Close but not quite. As Peter noted, it needs to have trim around it. Also, the sill should slope up to the sash of the window - there should NOT be a step up to the sash. It should look like the diagram in the settings dialog. Quote Link to comment
CipesDesign
Bill, et. al., I did file a bug and in the process discovered something: if you adjust the "Keep" dimension (make it wider) it will (sort of) fix the problem of a gap between the trim and the sill. I say sort of because although it does get rid of the gap it also demands that the user enter very specific dimensions (which may or may not be realistic or desired). I also added to the bug report that the "trim under sill" ought to exist entirely below the sill and that perhaps this bottom trim piece should have its own "width" parameter... Hope that helps (at least a little). P Quote Link to comment
billtheia
Thanks, Peter. I got the same idea, looking at AJ's drawing. His approach might be useful as a stop-gap until VW fixes the thing. I'd agree that the bottom trim should get it's own width. In fact, it would be really nice to allow the top trim to have it's own width as well. Quote Link to comment
CipesDesign
Yes, And for what it's worth, whenever I need a truly detailed/custom trim or sill I just model it and put it into its own class. Same goes for corner trim (at bldg corners). For most projects it's really not all that bad. Once you create one it's pretty simple to duplicate and move into place. So it's not really the end of the world. However, what irks me is when a new functionality is added and it doesn't really work. Like my grandfather always used to say: If it's worth doing, it's worth doing right! Quote Link to comment
billtheia
I have also resorted to modeling things like this on their own class but I'd really rather not have to. And, it's not a new feature that's not working, the window PIO has behaved this way since at least VW2008. Thanks again for the help, Peter. Quote Link to comment
billtheia
While you're at it, NVW, please add sills to the OIP. Not sure why shutters & wall splay are there and sills isn't. It would be really useful to be able to make changes to more than one window at a time. Quote Link to comment
Cadplan Architecture
I can insert into a wall ok, but not sure what you mean about trim. I can't get the bottom rail to be thinner either although in the UK timber windows do have a step up there as a sort of weather bar otherwise water dripping on to the cill would be blown straight back up the cill into the gap between the bottom of the casement and the top of the cill. billtheia
As a follow on to this, I just took another run at using the threshold in the door PIO and it still doesn't appear to allow for "horns" (extension past door jambs.) Without this, usefulness of the VW door PIO is a bit limited. See attached pic. Quote Link to comment
Greg Miller
Wow. 9 years later, windows are still modeled with the sill below a bottom "jamb". Quote Link to comment
