Bryan G.
This may be a no-brainer but I'm hitting a wall. Is there a way to generate a line with a letter or symbol spaced every so often. ie I would like to label my Gas and Phone lines with a "G" and "Ph" respectively. Quote Link to comment
michaelk
This has been a popular wish list item. There is no dedicated tool for it. But it can be done. Draw the line or polyline or polygon. Create the text. Select both the text and the line or polyline/polygon. Edit > Duplicate along path... hth michaelk Quote Link to comment
Bryan G.
Wow, Like I said a real no-brainer but it works great. Thanks much. This would be a great wish item to be able to create custom lines with text or symbols attached. Quote Link to comment
VincentCuclair
Guys what you're looking for is the Repetitive Unit tool I believe...... Quote Link to comment
michaelk
Good call, Vincent I never thought of using the RU tool for that. michaelk Quote Link to comment
Bryan G.
Thanks Vincent did not think of that either although it requires me to create a figure and apply it in line form it may be cumbersome with curves, however I have not played much with the concept but I definitely will. mapleack
I'm glad I found this thread, been hitting my head off the desk over this. I wish they'd fix this and allow importing of line types. Get with it! Quote Link to comment
Bryan G.
Guess I'll add it to the wish list. Quote Link to comment
CipesDesign
The rep. unit seems to work fine for me. See attached. Is there something else you are wanting that this cannot provide? Quote Link to comment
Bryan G.
Looks good Peter. I get the same results, just seems like allot to go through for a readily used task, I wish there was a feature in the line tool that would make it easier, but hey in the time it took me to type this I could have had it done with the RU tool. Just dreaming. Quote Link to comment
Vectorworks, Inc Employee Matt Panzer Posted September 24, 2010 Vectorworks, Inc Employee Share Posted September 24, 2010 Once you set it up, you can save it as a red symbol and include that in your template. If you double-click on the Rep. Unit. red symbol in the resource palette, VW places you in the Rep. Unit. tool but using the red symbol's default settings. IOW: Double-click on the red symbol, draw the poly and Bob's your uncle. Quote Link to comment
Bryan G.
Thanks Matt I'll give it a whirl. But who's Bob, I don't know Bob, and why do I want Bob to be my uncle? Quote Link to comment
Vectorworks, Inc Employee Matt Panzer Posted September 25, 2010 Vectorworks, Inc Employee Share Posted September 25, 2010 You're very welcome. As far as Bob goes, he's a fine fellow and fairly low maintenance. I'm afraid, to have this method work for you, you'll have to make him part of your family. Besides, my family's had him long enough. Steelbreeze10
Hi fellas, Thanks for this thread. I too was beating my head off of my desk trying to figure out where they hid the special line styles. Letters and symbols will be a very welcome addition. I was very used to Auto CAD line types before switching to VW. I could use lines for utilities, such as gas (-----G-----), But also for fences (----X----), and even one type had a small square to represent a fence post. Until then, is there a way to adjust the scale of each type? So that a property line dash pattern can be longer or shorter depending on the scale? I know that it will be adjusted according to the scale of the sheet/layer, but I'd like to be able to scale it at will to whatever size I think looks right to me. Is this possible now? Also, from the post above, I have no idea to get to the 'Red Symbol' or Replicate Unit command. Can someone clarify this process for a newbie? Thanks in advance, you are all awesome. I'll tell Bob you said hi, and miss him dearly.. Quote Link to comment
Vectorworks, Inc Employee Matt Panzer Posted November 18, 2010 Vectorworks, Inc Employee Share Posted November 18, 2010 Steelbreeze10, You can click on "Advanced Properties" (vis the Obj Info palette) of any Sheet Layer Viewport and set the Dashed Line Scale (among other things). This will scale all dashed lines in that viewport only. The "Repetitive Unit" Tool is located in the Detailing toolset of the Architect Workspace. You can make a "Red Symbol" by first creating an instance of a Repetitive Unit object setup how you want. If you need text in it, make a symbol with the text object, then choose that symbol for the Repetitive Unit object (through the Obj Info palette). Once you have it how you like, select it and create a symbol. In the Create Symbol dialog, choose the "Convert to Plug-in Object" option. This is what makes it a Red Symbol. Then you should be able to double-click on it to invoke the Repetitive Unit tool using the same settings as the one in the Red Symbol. PS: Thanks for letting Bob know we still care.
