Complex Site - Tube station or something like that

It?s possible to create something like a tube station? A hole that expand inside the site? I tried some subtractions but it crashed. I first created a low plato (5m depth) 5x5m down in the site and then created a extrude rectangle (5x20x5). When I subtract the extruded rectangle from the site VW tells about a complex geometry or something like. I made a sketch.

It is my understanding that recesses or "caves" are not possible in the dtm at this time...

Could you convert the DTM to a solid and then to the subtractions?

Or maybe? Never tried this, but sink a DTM pad of the station foot print, model the subto stuff and model a fake lid maybe from a NURBS loft of the contours or a 2nd DTM of just the lid area?

Benson's approach is a sound one. After all, that is how the station will actually be constructed...
