orlando Teixeira
Hello ppl, I am trying to model a roof, in this case a Portuguese roof tile. First i tryied to model a tile ( lofts ) and array it, after i tryied to converted it to solid ( add solids ) but vectorworks took so long that i had to shut down the program after out of memory error... Does anyone has ever did such a roof or similar that can help me? i can do it the problem is that it stays too heavy.. I do not like a flat roof with an texture for my 3d presentations. Can you help me please ? Thx in advanced Edited April 6, 2010 by orlando Teixeira Quote Link to comment
michaelk
Not sure what a Portuguese roof tile looks like, but I've had some success using symbols made of NURBS surfaces inserted on working planes to create roof tiles. If you need the tiles to have depth, they can be shelled. hth michaelk Quote Link to comment
islandmon
1) Model> individual tile > create >Symbol pro: efficient , easily modifiable con: requires different symbols for each part 2) Model > individual surface > create >Symbol pro: efficient , easily modifiable, avoids many of the parts problems con: requires specific surfaces for the various configurations. 3) Use a Texture > map > Image of roof + bump map of surface pro: easy to apply cons: strange & often fake looking details. 4) Use a combination of the above pros: models details accurately with Symbols , uses textures for the surfaces. here's an older version example of the techniques : Barrel Roof Tile modeling example Quote Link to comment
orlando Teixeira
hello michael, well it looks like this for example: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/4c/Telhado_-_Igreja_do_Rosario_(Cuiaba).jpg Quote Link to comment
orlando Teixeira
hello islamond, ok thx for the answer, i think if someone added displacement map to vectorworks it would be much better than bump map. Someday we will have several types of roof, at least i hope he!he!he! thx you both Quote Link to comment
Danielj1
A technique that has worked for me is avoiding the use of rounded shapes for the tiles, and instead using faceted forms with a series of flat faces creating the roof tile. This reduces the rendering time and memory requirements dramatically with hardly any impact on the quality of the final rendering. In most cases the camera's viewpoint is sufficiently distant from the project so that the difference between faceted and rounded tiles can hardly be observed. orlando Teixeira
Hello ppl, back again. Well i finally manage to put my roof tile up. The only problem is that it takes forever to render he!he!he! Here is an image. Please tell me your opinions please. Thx For your help By the way does anyone know how to export an image from vectorworks to PNG for example with a transparent background ? I had to edit it on photoshot to put the sky. JSiegel
Orlando, The image looks good I would change the following: 1) remove window hinge lines( you've made the effort to render shadows, so why show a hinge line in your casements?) 2) add grass texture (attached) 3) It would be nice to be able to "read" the corner, left side of the garage & chimney as more than flat yellow & white. (adjust ambient). 4) roof came out well. 4) I must get back to Portugal as in America our color selections are rather muted! Obrigado, J Quote Link to comment
propstuff
I had to edit it on photoshot to put the sky. Have you tried using HDRI backgrounds for lighting and skies? Longer render times but much better shadows These are old tests from some years ago with free HDRIs I found on the interblog Quote Link to comment
