I am working on Version 8.0.1 - All the documentation suggests you should be able to enter 255 characters per cell. Although this is possible in the database associated with the symbol when I create a worksheet the number of characters is restricted to 64, a lot of information is being deleated. Is it possible to increase to the 255 as mentioned.

Indeed I tried it out also and I get 60 characters (if I counted correct). Also the results are very unpredictable because I got at the end other characters than those I typed.

I think you have to do a little redesign to accomplish your task.. Try to use a database instead of your worksheet. Or maybe you can export your data outside VectorWorks for processing. We do so for our calculation program. I know it is a lot of work, but in the end it is worth the effort.

Try to export your data as a text file. Then use Visual Basic (on PC) or RealBasic on Macintosh to convert and calculate your data. With both programs you can create reports and you can store your data into a database.

This is a bug, you should upgrade to version 8.5.2, which is a free upgrade to all owners of version 8.

I read your message on the message board. On this moment we still use VectorWorks 8.5.2. I tried a couple of days before to enter more than 64 characters in a worksheet cell. Regretfully I got stuck around 60. I typed by hand those characters in one cell. I can be wrong but I think that upgrading to VectorWorks 8.5.2 is not a solution.

Just as a bit of information, I have personally tested 9.0.1 after reading this post and although I didn't try for a maximum, I did get 260 characters into one cell (every letter of the alphabet x 10). Naturally, pending on cell size and on worksheet size there are limitations to the number of characters that are visible respectively.

This is odd, in both the Mac and Windows version of 8.5.2, I am not hitting a limit around 60 characters. I have seen a graphical glitch, which starts putting the additional characters on a new line in the edit box (Like when a word processor wraps a line that types past the end of a page), but if you continue to enter information the whole thing is retained in the cell.

Could this be what you are seeing?

Ordinary worksheet cells may contain up to 255 characters.

Database subrow cells (cells that have fractional number designations, for example "2.7", that are created beneath a database row whose criteria is met by at least one drawing object) may contain up to 63 characters.

The 63 character limit for database subrow cells is part of the original design for this feature. This limitation was implemented in order to help limit and reduce the amount of memory an individual worksheet requires.

The above limitations are present in 8.5.2 as well as 9.0.x versions.

Other customers have reported this to Nemetschek North America and this design issue is being investigated.

So if I create a symbol, attach a record to it of more than 63 characters (all text) all of which is accepted, place the item in a drawing and ask for 'create report', the worksheet , which appears automaticaly, will only show the first 63 characters?

So for preperation of a quotation I can only use 63 characters to explain the item and there is no way of expanding this?

That is correct. Database subrow cells are limited to 63 characters. A quick example of this is to create a new database row that has at least 1 subrow and enter a long text string (> 63 characters, < 256 characters) into one of the database row cells. You will see that the text string is displayed in its entirety in the database row cell in which you entered it, but that only the first 63 characters of the text appear in the subrow cell beneath.
