Finding layer and class of an object

I am very new to VW and cannot figure out how to click on a line or object and have the computer tell me the design layer...since you can't click on an object in any design layer other than the current one.

It helps to know what version you have, but if you are using a relatively recent version one way you can find the layer is to right click on an object and choose "Force Select" or "Activate Layer". Either one will make the layer of that object active.

Or, you could change the layer view options to Show,Snap, Modify Others in the Navigation Palette. Then you can just click on the object and look in the OIP for the layer of the selected object.

I should have also said that setting the layer view options to Show, Snap, Modify Others won't let you select objects in layers whose scale is different from the active layer.
