Looks like a 3D mesh object. Are you in top/plan view? Rendering in hidden line might make the situation clearer.

I've gotten weird patterns reminiscent of this if the source of the dxf code on the sender's end was written with comma-delimited ASCII data that were out of intended order.

Maybe this:

Objects saved from Illustrator or other software as dxf and imported into VW. Zoom to the nodes to see if any of them are the objects you should be seeing. Outlying lines and points might be straight line segments from the main parts of the objects to what are supposed to be arc points (or bezeiers) on long radius curves, but mistakenly interpreted by VW as distant single points.

I used to see these, but not so much with the newer versions. Delete the distant points in polyline edit.
