Plant database

Recommended Posts

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to add plants to the existing plant database so that they are available to use in other documents. I have added plants to a design and had assumed they would be retained in the main database ready to be used in other designs. I also tried to update the existing plant data base but every time I try I get an error message and the application it uses(filemaker I think) quits.

VecotorWorks Landmark Generic Plant Library

General

The library is a Generic library. Plants are not configured with Species and Specification information but are intended to be configured (using the Nemetschek Plant Database) with species appropriate for the users projects and regions, prior to or during use.

It is recommended that users use the Place Plant Configuration dialog to "Duplicate' the generic symbol before entering species specific data.

Classing

The plant objects in the library contain a number of different parts which are classed. Much of the advanced behavior of the plants in the library is controlled by settings of class visibility and, in viewports, by the use of class overrides for object opacity, and line weights. These classes are all named "Plant-Component- " A short description of the classes and what they are used for follows. The library has a number of sheet layers with viewports showing the result of different visibility and class attribute settings.

Plant-Component-Outline: This class is used for the outside perimeter of the plant. It is intended to be visible during placement of the plant objects but not visible during printing.

Plant-Component-Color Fill : This class is used for the background color in shrubs and smaller plants. It is intended to be visible when printing a colored presentation drawing but not visible when printing planting plans.

Plant-Component-Bloom: This class is used for plants that have a bloom. The bloom can be toggled off and on by adjusting the visibility setting for this class. If the blooms are too bright they can be 'toned down' by reducing the class opacity setting in the Class Settings dialog.

Plant-Component-Canopy: This class is used for the colored fill in tree canopies. This allows the fill in the tree canopies to be turned off but the fills in understory plants to be left visible. In addition the transparency of the tree canopy can be controlled by adjusting the opacity setting in the Class Settings Dialog for this class.

Plant-Component-Interior Linework: This class is used to control the visibility of detail lines that are used in the interior of plants. At smaller scales, and often on planting plans it may become desirable that these lines are not drawn. They will also respond to changes in the class opacity settings.

Plant-Component-Tags: This class is used for plant tags (and polygons) and is set in the Place Plant Settings - > Edit Definition dialog on the default Prefs tab. All of the plants in this library are set to use this class for these items.

A number of other classes have been provided in this document. These are Plants-New, Plants-Remove, and Plants-Existing. These are intended for use in the placement of defined plant objects and allow the user to discriminate between the plants based on the intent. For instance class Plants-Remove will be invisible except on a Demolition Plan. Plants-Existing would be grayed on a Planting Plan but left visible on a colored presentation drawing.

Configured Plant Objects

A symbol folder containing five configured, 2D and 3D plant objects has been provided. This is intended to showcase how the library can work once the user had assigned the species information to the generic plant objects.

Plant 2D Rendering and Speed

The plant objects in this library have been configured to turn off 2D plant rendering when they are placed. This improves the performance of plants especially if you are on slower hardware, placing large numbers of plants, or using the more detailed plant objects. However, outlining of plants and shadows for trees depends on 2D plant rendering. To enable outlining and shadows, select the desired plants, and turn 2D plant rendering on using the Object Info Palette. This will allow for faster placement but still offer the outlining and shadow functionality.

Basically the Plants in the General Plant Database should be accessed via the Plant Tool which then makes your selection available in the Resource Browser as a Symbol which can be linked between files & libraries.
