VW 9.0.1 Slowness

Recommended Posts

Since we have upgraded to 9.0.1 two weeks ago, we have been experiencing incredible slowness while using the program. We work on 3 computers, all Mac, OS 8.6 and 9. Two are PowerBook G3's. The slowness starts almost immediately after opening the file we want to work in. The size of the file doesn't matter. It is surprisingly slow even on our Power books.

It is painfully slow to: change saved views, edit symbols, create a symbol from an object, initially place an object (doors & windows especially), use the drafting tools like line into segments, creating a circle or rectangle, editing a saved view. Once we make a symbol of an Architect door, it does place fairly normally, although as I said the initial placing and editing of the object is laborious (I noticed this on 9 and a little on 8.5).

The rendering feature with OpenGL is a little slow, but since we don't use it often it's bearable. I'll tell you, the program would be a pleasure to use if it were not for the slowness of it to date. It takes literally several seconds to change a saved view. Is that normal? I'd be more than willing to send a file to tech support if it helps. Does anyone have any suggestions (besides going back to 8.5). Thanks in advance.

With the release of 9.01, we have found many of the problems have gone away. The speed issue is still there, but not as slow as before. I'd say about a 50% improvement, but not as spunky or snappy as 8.5.2.

However, I might suggest bumping up the allocated RAM to 150MB with a minimum set (prefered) to 80MB. This appears to help quite noticeably.

This is a known concern and is being addressed. Unfortunately with greater stability and more intuitive processes a software program is going to become slower. We are trying to find a way to marry speed and stability however this will take more time.

Unfortunately I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with this problem. I have a 600mhz PC w/356mb ram and a 32 mb video card. It sounds like the performance is the same regardless of platform.

Brian: While the software since MC 7 has improved radically, the difference in speed between 7 and 8 is not nearly as bad as between 8 and 9. As I realize it is appealling to add more features and "functionality" to the program, if it cannot perform at a tollerable speed level (especially for those of us who bill for our time) you will lose market share. Users will simply bite the bullet and switch to other programs. With the advent of OS X and its ability to run UNIX based programs, you will be in danger of losing market share if the program does not perform. With regards to Architect, which is what I use, it would be wise of those who make this decision, to divest the software of extraneous features which architects for liability reasons, have no business designing. For example the circuiting tool. This should be left to a licensed electrican in residential design, and an electrical engineer for commerical work. This is assuming features like this add potential conflicts in the code and slow down the machine. Any comment?

I am not a software engineer. But I can see that vw9 involved not an upgrade from vw8.52, but a complete re writing of the underlying code. The program is now 64 bit in stead of 32... whatever that actually means to the average user. The program looks very similar to the use when he works with the tools/palettes and so forth, but the engine is a new one and it has many bugs and uses enormous computing resources to accomplish what the earlier version was able to do.

If it aint broke don't fix it. I would wager that as many things are messed up in the newer version... that worked fine... as were added and were missing in the older version.

I think it is disgraceful what this company has done with this upgrade.. and more so that they are charging so much to users who are upgrading.

Way too much public relations and BS and way too little substance.
