Spiders in my attic

Recommended Posts

A spider can be used for different things. Google and other search sites use spiders to look at web pages to be able to document what's in them for a search. Ne're-do-wells can use them to harvest email addresses for spam purposes.

Good point !

both 'robot.txt' and '.htaccess' could conceivably limit page access for those pernicious bots.

Keeping in mind that the profile records exist within the SQL ...it's also possible to prevent access to the various private data fields.

I'm still unclear on this one.

Are these spiders a threat to user profiles or not?

Why are they allowed to view the profiles?

Give me a break.

If you put something on the internet, expect it to be indexed and searchable.

If a website doesn't make something indexed and searchable, expect people to try to hack access to it.

My advice: If you don't want information to be public, don't put it on your public profile on a public bulletin board.
