Site modeling

Recommended Posts

I've modeled up a site which is along a river, and as such the terrain is steep and varied throughout. I'm trying to model a series of buildings along the embankment, some of which are subterranean.

Question: Is there a way of simply boolean-ing/subtracting solids of the building footprint away from the site model?

You can use a PAD (a type of Site Modifier) surrounded by a FENCE (another Site Modifier). The easiest way to do it is as follows: Draw the footprint of the building (as a closed poly) and with it selected run the menu command "Modify/Convert/Objects From Polyline". In the resulting dialog choose Object Type = Site Modifier, then when the Create Site Modifier dialog comes up choose "Pad" and set the Z value (elevation in relation to the Site Model), click OK. Next, draw a shape outside of the new Pad (how far outside will determine the slope of the cut, but VW's Site Models cannot do vertical slopes, you must offset the shape at least slightly to the outside of the Pad). With the new shape selected run the Objects from poly command again, this time choosing "Site Modifier/Fence" as the object type. Now select the Site Model, make sure that you choose to show the "Proposed" Site Model, and click "Update". You should now have a hole in the Site Model. Hope that helps.
