brent kjernisted
I have some "vectorworks learning series disks" for version 10 that I am going through. Are using classes and layers the same in 2009 or do I need to read the manual to learn about different options. Is there a good tutorial on line about using classes and layers. Thanks! gmm18
The basic ideas might be the same, but there are some HUGE differences in how you can use classes and layers in 2009. You should consider getting some updated tutorials or finding a trainer for some one-on-one. Quote Link to comment
Jonathan Pickup
layers are where things are, classes are what things are. in Vectorworks 2009, classes are more useful then in Vectorworks 10. http://web.me.com/jpickup1/Site/archoncad/Entries/2006/7/15_Layers_and_Classes.html Quote Link to comment

J. Krentz Design
Hi Brent, There are many ways to use layers and classes in VectorWorks. The way I use layers are the same as using different drawing sheets or individual paper sheets in hand drawing each with a different scale as needed. Example A-1, A-2, A-3, etc. would all be on different layers. I use classes the same way as an AutoCAD user would use layers in that program. Classes are used to group similar components such as dimensions, text, walls, etc so that the user can turn these "thing" on and off within each layer. There are other ways to use these features but this is how our office uses classes and layers. Hope this helps. Jeff Quote Link to comment
mike m oz
What Jeff is saying is pretty much in accord with what Robert Anderson has suggested in the past as being the best way to conceptualise them: - Layers are the where. eg ground floor, first floor etc. - Classes are the what. eg concrete floor, brick wall, timber framing etc. Quote Link to comment
