High-resolution 4-color process resolution is usually 300 dpi because the screen lpi is 150 (multiply x2 to get resolution). If you are printing high-res photo-quality process, then 300dpi is what you want.

Usually 260dpi is sufficient for color printing on most "end-user" printers, even with those special glossy "photo papers". Anything higher than that and you're wasting ink and time.

For black and white plots, 150 dpi is plenty. You will not see any noticeable difference with resolutions higher than that.

If you are losing detail in your output, I would suggest checking your printer settings (on the actual printer), to assure that you are printing at the Highest Quality setting, rather than "Normal" or "Draft", if such settings are part of your printers firmware or software drivers.
