Render Farming

I used to work with Form-Z, and this was a nice feature of that program. I believe VectorWorks is one of the few 3D modeling/rendering programs that doesn't allow this.

Would be a nice feature, but does the actual competition allow this? ArchiCAD, AutoCAD, Revit etc. (Yes, I'm looking at the situation from a particular angle.)

Could make good use of some older computers sitting around doing nothing in my office.

I have a farm of old computers processing SETI-data... The likelihood of finding extraterrestrial intelligent life seems to be much higher than finding terrestrial intelligent clients.

Yes Graham, Render Farming would be a wonderful step in the right direction, but it would appear that NNA wont spare resources even on making VW multi processor aware for the Mac Pro you use and other machines like it, so i doubt they can be bothered to write a whole module/plugin/component for render farming.

There is nothing "cheap" or "arrogant" about facts.

NNA have stated on several occasions that they have no interest in making VW multi processor aware/capable because they believe it a waste of resources and that the extra processors only carry out menial unimportant tasks.

Arrogance, i think you will find sits squarely on the other foot.

Show me the statements.

MP support is not trivial, especially in a cross-platform product. To date, the resources (investment/cost of time, people, and technology) required to make VW completely MP aware/capable were far above the payback to the user, based on the various legacies of the code and culture.

With Parasolid, D-Cubed, Windows 7, and MacOS Snow Leopard, there is far greater potential to utilize efficient, straight-forward tools to make VW a more powerful and sophisticated platform.

Some of you assume that when you don't get something you want, it is "personal", that we don't want you to have it, or we don't think it is ultimately important.

In reality, every request, every potential change/advance in technology has to be weighed, not unlike any other design process, balancing cost and benefit, investment and return, input and output. For the modest cost that most of our users pay for these tools, a lot of decisions are NOT easy.

But don't question our intentions that we don't want to give you better tools. Some of us are users and fight like hell, advocating for our respective professional interests (e.g. architecture), to see that the application moves forward to best serve everyone outside AND inside NNA and NAG.

You want something, fine, ask for it. But don't automatically assume you are being ignored, or that your request isn't important enough, or that we don't care. If you think that way, why post to the Wish List Requests Forum in the first place?

Buying a specialised rendering program with farming would also be a good starting point. (What? That costs money ? we did not want to spend any money...)

Render farming isn't my issue. I find that still images and transitions can acomplish most architectural animation objectives more efficiently than calculating 24 or 30 frames a second. A few hours in the library reading about traditional film making saves many hours at the render farm.

However, allowing multiple instances of the application to run at the same time would be a simple way of addressing the issue in a limited way (which is as ambitious a proposal as I would make).

It would also create other opportunities (such as running two sessions each with their own specialized workspace).

I do this all the time. OK, not all the time, but occasionally. I just have two copies of VW (application only, in the same folder.)

Could it be that Windows does not allow it?

Render farming isn't my issue. I find that still images ....

Still images is precisely what we'd like render farming for. We have a lot of horse power in our office that could be utilised if Vectorworks had Xgrid support built in. This integration might be a relatively simple matter when Vectorworks is moved to Cocoa.

We use Artlantis at the moment for rendering images, which we find a lot quicker than VW, but if Vectorworks had render farming capability I imagine it would be a lot faster than Artlantis.
