Christiaan
What's the optimal amount of RAM that VectorWorks can make use of on a Mac? I've got it in my mind that Carbon apps only access 4GB... is this correct? Quote Link to comment
Jeffrey W Ouellette
Christiaan, My understanding from our engineers is that the Mac OS will allow VW (and other apps) to address 3GB of RAM, in theory, but more likely 2.5GB in the confines of reality. For Windows (all 32 bit versions)the limit is lower, about 2GB in theory, 1.5GB in practice. Quote Link to comment
Christiaan
Okay, thanks Jeffrey. I guess it comes down to Artlantis for us then. No one happens to know how much RAM Artlantis 2.0 can address do they? Quote Link to comment
Travis
Christiaan, it seems your second query is also answered by Jeffrey's post. The accessible RAM is controlled by the OS more than by the app itself. I can verify that on our 4+gb machines, it appears that never more than 2.5?2.8 is allocated to a single application. We don't, however, use Artlantis. Do they somehow bypass the OS limitations? HTH, Edited March 10, 2008 by Travis Quote Link to comment
Christiaan
My understanding is that 10.5 is a 64 bit OS, and that Cocoa applications written for 10.5 are also 64 bit so therefore they can address more memory (4 terabytes?). i.e. VectorWorks' limitation is that it's a 32 bit Carbon app, not Mac OS. To be honest, though, I don't really know what I'm talking about as I only pick this stuff up from reading the odd technical article here and there. Quote Link to comment
