Teresa the Intern
here's another question that maybe you can field as well, what is the difference between layers, class', and view ports? I'm new to the whole CADD/VW industry...Thanks! Quote Link to comment
Pat Stanford
Layers are a place for things to be. Each layer can have its own scale and z-Height. The Z-height of a layer is used to put together a model of a structure of a building (or something similar) so you can draw using a relative Z zero point on each layer but have everything stack properly. Classes are a was of classifying objects. Every object is on a layer and has a class, even if you don't want to use either. Classes can be used to control the attributes of objects (color, line thickness, etc.). They can also be used to control the visibility of objects. Viewports are a way to view a collection of layers and classes. Each viewport has its own layer and class visibility settings. I sometimes think of a viewport like a slow scan security camera with a bunch of special filters. You point the camera at what you want to see (a place on the design layers), and then control the filters (layer and class settings) to see what you need to focus on. When things change on the design layers, the viewport updates (or you can force it to update if it is rendered) to show the changes with the filters you previously set. The way you will use layer, classes and viewports depends highly on the industry you are in and the kind of drawings you need to make. Pat Quote Link to comment
