md
Hi everybody, I've been reading the posts on the solid modeling forum to learn some 3D modeling techniques to build architectural models. I've tried the method Islandmon posted on another thread - extrude a polygon along a path, and save as a symbol. I've also used the extrude command from the "model" menu. Both techniqes have given me the shape I wanted, but placing them accurately in 3D space has been difficult. I can use the 3D move command to place an object if I know or can calculate the correct coordinates. But I can't get one object to snap to another in a 3D view. I've tried placing 3D loci at the corners of the symbols I've created (tried both hybrid and 3D symbols), but still no reliable snaps. They appear to snap to loci, but after rotating you can see that the objects are not actually touching. So, is there a way to snap to objects in 3D? If not, is there at least a way to restrict movement to one direction at a time to help place objects manually? Quote Link to comment
Jonathan Pickup
do you have your Snap to Object turned on. Its on the constraints palette. Try double clicking on this constraint. There is a 3D edge snap you can turn on. I tend to move and snap in plant view, then move and snap in front view. i have a 3D modeling manual avalable for VectorWorks 12.5 Quote Link to comment
Pat Stanford
I agree with Jonathan, you can not reliably move things in an isometric view. If you need to move objects, use the primary views, Top/Front/Right/Etc. If you need to move them in ways that don't correspond to these views, then set the working plane and use the Look at Working Plane button and move them there. Pat Quote Link to comment
md
Thanks! I had object snaps turned on, but the 3D edge box wasn't checked. This seems to be helping. Now I can see that the top, front, left, etc. views are working to move objects into position. Quote Link to comment
Cris with no H
You can move fairly reliably in 3D space if you have 3D edge snaps turned on and are moving from point to point using the 3D selection tool, not the 2D selection tool. Cris Dopher Quote Link to comment
panthony
I use the point to point snap for moving items when I have a point in space existing to snap to. Works fine...use it all the time. Quote Link to comment
GWS
I've always used the "3-view" method for aligning 3d objects but am now trying the above suggestion and it seems to be a great help, although I've only tried with simple situations. Thanks for your help. Guy Stevens Quote Link to comment
