file size getting huge / VW crashing / verification process taking 3-5minut

[ASL]

All of a sudden all our files are starting to have large file sizes... they used to be around 1MB each, now they are all of a sudden around 8MB (sure we have added some information, but certainly not 8-fold).

This may, or may not be the root of the problem, but now the 'File Verification' process during the opening of the files is taking around 3-5 minutes. And after all that it crashes VW (I'll include the crash report below).

The only other change I noticed prior to every file, which has references going both ways (e.g. Plan has Structural Grid file referenced in and Structural Grid file has Plan files referenced in), crashing is that upon opening it was telling me that Reference Links would have to be broken, but they appeared to be file upon opening the file.

HELP, I have a project deadline on January 2nd and can't open 3/4 of the project files. This is a nightmare!!!

It looks like you may have multiple circular looping references ...

Create a new clean file and then WGR each Layer from the first working file while saving; then, break the links. Now WGR from one of the other files. If you desire to discover the anomaly .. repeat WGR procedure with each file until crash re-occurs.

My understanding per the thread to a previous of my questions, one could do the circular referencing once one had installed SP2.

Prior to VW2008 SP2, you could not have circular file references - you will get a message stating:

'The selected file cannot be referenced, because that would cause a cycle of design layer viewport style references'.

In VW2008 SP2, you can now have circular file references. However, you cannot have circular data references; if this happens, you will get a message notifying you of circular data.

Having said this, I am not sure that the setup you described above is circular. Furthermore, all this applies to DLVPs.

Sorry you are having this problem ASL. What is the "file verification"? Ever since I started with v2008 I noticed that some files take a LONG time to open...I always just thought that VW or my machine locked up. Is there anything shown to let us know that a "verification" process is taking place?

A dandy acronym.

In my particular case, the root of the problem seems to have been caused by a 'circularly referenced SYMBOL'.

Islandmon, you seemed to be on the right track with your initial comment, but in the end it was not a circularly referenced file (using DLVP), but rather that one symbol.

Now that that symbol has been deleted and all files in the project have been purged, my largest file size is 1.5MB and the program is no longer crashing a dozen times a day.

So, my advice, certainly use referenced symbols, but don't let any loops develop.
