Layer Links 2008

I've gotten numerous times a message saying something like 'you cannot create a viewport - please unlock layer links' -the problem is i can't find layer link in VW 2008 - it seems it doesn't exist? has the name changed?

Right, layer links do not exist in 2008.

Go to VW help and read this and more.

"In the VectorWorks Design Series, layer links are being superseded by design layer viewports. Layer links cannot be created, but for backward compatibility, existing layer links can still be viewed and edited. See Presenting Drawings with Design Layer Viewports."

the drawing in question was created in 2008, so strange that a linked layer would have been created - stranger yet that a message would pop up discussing the need to un-link some linked layers...

I'm all for one feature superceding another.

But disabling a standard feature from one version to the next is not very user centric design.

Hey All, Layer Links are still around, just not in the standard workspaces. The command "Create Layer Link" can be added to your workspace via the Workspace Editor. HTH's...

There is a statement in the online help: "Because VectorWorks Fundamentals users cannot create design layer viewports, and Design Series users cannot create layer links.."

This statement is incorrect, and I have entered this as a documentation bug in our bug-tracking database.

Layer links can indeed be created and used by Design Series users. Design Series users are indeed encouraged to use Design Layer Viewports (DLVPs) inasmuch as DLVPs offer a lot more functionality. To create the simpler object, just add the "Create Layer Links..." menu command to your workspace using the Workspace Editor.
