Converting referenced in to b+w

I want to reference in a drawing which has various classes with different colour attributes. However, once referenced in i want to convert it to black and white, but without disrupting the class settings or the entire document?? Any ideas?

If you are using Design Layer Viewport Referencing you can check the 'Black & White Only' box under the Advanced Properties in the Object Info box.
