J Lucas
Using VW 2008, Constrain Tangent, trying to draw a line tangent to two circles. The Tangent/Tangent cue does not appear on the second circle. Any clues? Quote Link to comment
Guest
I'm not having problems. Are both circles on the same layer / class? Quote Link to comment
P Retondo
J, make sure you have selected "Constrain Tangent" in the constraints palette. To get it to work in the opposite direction, hold down the key. Quote Link to comment
J Lucas
Layer and class are the same for both circles. I select line tool and Constrain Tangent, I choose the first circle and it attaches a moving tangent line, but no matter how I move the curser around the second circle the Tangent/Tangent cue does not show up. Vectorworks, Inc Employee Robert Anderson Posted September 27, 2007 Vectorworks, Inc Employee Share Posted September 27, 2007 J. Lucas, try increasing your snap radius. Quote Link to comment
Jonathan Pickup
it works for me too. I used this just yesterday when I was making the movies for my new esssential manual. Quote Link to comment
Guest
Do you have all your Constraints turned on, or just a few? Which ones do you have on? Quote Link to comment
J Lucas
Robert and Katie: I only have the Constrain Tangent constraint on. I tried reseting the VW Preferences and then increasing the snap radius. I tried several settings for SR. Anything 30 and over seems to act like an angle constraint and the object/tangent cue shows up but not tangent/tnagent cue. When I click the object/tangent cue the line does not jump to the tangent of the second circle but is placed where I click. With the SR set to 25 or less the only cue I get at the second circle is the object cue. It must be some silly thing I am doing wrong, but I do not know what. Quote Link to comment
Guest
Turn on Snap to Tangent, Smart Points, and Snap to Object (Although, you should be getting it with just snap to tangent on) Quote Link to comment
Guest
By any chance, do you have "Smart Cursor Cues" off in VW preferences? Quote Link to comment
J Lucas
Katie: I tried your latest suggestions. Still no tangent/tangent cue at the second circle. I noticed one more detail that may be a clue. When I click on the first circle and the movable tangent line appears, I do not get the single "tangent" cue as illustrated in the manual. Guest
You won't get the tangent cursor cue if you click on the circle and move away. The tangent cursor cue only displays if you start the line away from the circle and snap to the point of tangency along the circle. Try this and see if you can get a tangent cursor cue. Do you get other cursor cues? If you are on Mac, try running disk utility. If you are on Windows, you may need to update the video driver. Quote Link to comment
Pat Stanford
Are you getting any hints at all? The "y" key (in the standard workspaces) toggles the screen hints on and off. Could the circle be drawn such that you are getting an Object hint at the same point as a tangent hint? Pat Quote Link to comment
J Lucas
I discovered what I was doing wrong. I had the line tool in constain mode. Once I turned that off the tangent/tangent cue shows up. Thanks to everyone who responded. I am learning Vectorworks and the support on this forum has been great! In my humble opinion VW 2008 is great too. Moving from autocad, I have been repeatedly thrilled by what VW can do. Quote Link to comment
P Retondo
J, wow, that was a bracing exercise! No matter how hard we try, it seems there is always something (almost) obvious that escapes us. Quote Link to comment
Cris with no H
J Lucas, you must have Snap To Objects on in order for any further object-based snaps to show up. Cris Dopher Quote Link to comment
