Dieter @ DWorks
I'm trying to find a way to easily create a pillow. How to make a good looking pillow? Please tell me your methods. Quote Link to comment
Pat Stanford
How about subtracting solids? 1. Extrude a rectangle to the overall size of the pillow (or a little larger), the thickness is probably the mose important. 2. Use the polyline tool to create a concave shape that is larger than the rectangle. This will be the curve to care off one side of the rectangle. 3. Either copy/rotate or create new shapes for the other three edges. 4. Select all 5 objects and subtract solids. Or Intersect Solids? 1. Create and elipse and extrude it. 2. Look at a side view of the extrusion and screate another elipse. Extude that. 3. Select both extrusions and Intersect Solids. It all depends on how accurate you need the pillow to be. Don't ask how to put on fringed tassels. ;-) Pat Quote Link to comment
propstuff
If you start with Model>3D PowerPack> Create Interpolated Surface you can make a flat surface and pull the verticies up and down to make the surface bulge you will get (say) the top half. Then mirror it to get the bottom half and push it around. This produces a fairly realistic pillow form Edited August 24, 2007 by propstuff Quote Link to comment
propstuff
And just to prove I have no life.......... Here's a more finished one, ...complete with tassells. :-D Top: Interpolated Surface Push and pull verticies to get the top half Extract edges to get the seam line, Ungroup and Compose to make 1 NURBS Curve (keep somewhere) Bottom: Use Curve to make new Nurbs surface Push and pull new surface to make bottom half Move Bottom down a small amount to make room for braid Braid: Get Curve back again Duplicate curve and move it down the same distance as the bottom was moved Duplicate it again amd move it half way between them Scale the middle one to make it a bit bigger than the other 2 Loft between the 3 curves. Tassel: Draw half profile of body Sweep Draw curvy line. Extrude along Path with a circle to make 1 string Make symbol of string Place multiple string symbols and group Place Tassel body in place with string group Create Tassel symbol Place Tassel Symbols in place Render Weight with Textures 1.5MB Weight without Textures 650KB cheers Quote Link to comment

VIRTUALENVIRONS
Lots of good stuff on this thread. The 3D dragger is a game changer. Below is a video that constructs a pillow in 51 seconds. It could be continued to be more elaborate, but it's a pillow. The file is included. PILLOW.vwx 1 Quote Link to comment

The file is lost to time.... The Forum also seems to have lost the image files that were attached. I have barely touched SubDiv, so I'm not sure, but that may well be an effective way to go these days. N. Quote Link to comment

Vectorworks, Inc Employee Peter Neufeld. Posted February 6, 2024 Vectorworks, Inc Employee Share Posted February 6, 2024 Hello, Nice one Nick! How about this using the Subdivision tool in Mirror mode? I was a bit untidy as I did this quickly but you get my drift. 2 min movie below: Cushion.mp4 Cheers, Peter 4 Quote Link to comment
VIRTUALENVIRONS
HI Guys, I have been modelling in this area recently. There is a difference between modelling pillows and cushions. Although they are right up Subdivisions alley, NURBS have a lot of control in this area. The sofa below has both, cushions and pillows. If you notice the cushsions have a subdivision top surface, rounded corners and flat bottom. The pillows are the type sound in any home. All done with NURBS. The pillows can have a different radius on all sides, top and bottom, curves and isoparms could be extracted to decorate them if required. The sofa consists of 16 bands interwoven between the spokes. Rendered/Animated in Vectorworks for a change. Does a pretty good job. Edited February 7, 2024 by VIRTUALENVIRONS 1 Quote Link to comment
