Do embedded images export to .DWG ?

brian-rwc

Question

We are working with some plan files that unfortunately were set up with bitmap images as the backgrounds. Besides being a nightmare to work with we need to provide some means of a background to our consultants. (We are using VW 12.5.1) I assumed the image files don't export to .DWG but did a test export that I re-imported and the image file was included. Does anyone know if an AutoCAD user would get the same results? Is there any information about an embedded image file that gets encoded into the .dwg file vectorworks creates?

Related to the same general issue; our consultants using ACAD 2007 are having trouble opening the files we send them. It gives them an alert that it was created in another application and may have unpredictable results. We exported it as a ACAD 2000 thru 2006 .dwg file. I don't know if that's a new "security" type feature in ACAD 2007 to prevent use of non ACAD created .dwg files. Does anyone know about that or know of a way of avoiding it ? - Thanks.

The alert will show up if the file was generated by anything other than an autodesk product. OpenDWG has a way around it but autodesk took them to court because it relied on embedding one of their copywritten words or something like that. It had to be removed.

The upshot is that it doesn't mean their is a problem with the file, just that autodesk software wasn't involved so...if it doesn't work don't blame them..

That message doesn't prevent opening in Autocad, it just tries to scare users into thinking they'll do some harm by opening it. Another of Autodesk's many attempts to damage competitors rather than improving their own product. Tell your colleagues to ignore it.

Autocad doesn't embed images in DWG files. It externally references a separate image file, though users aren't always aware of that. They send files to each other not knowing that they have to send the image file also, so it doesn't work even with another AC user.
