Tony Totten
When I use the extruded polygon tool the shape formed is a mesh not an extrude. This does not happen with extruded rectangle tool. Mesh does not behave as extrude and is causing me major problem in creating 3d drawings. Quote Link to comment
G_Hannigan
You'll have a better chance of getting help if you describe the problem. Quote Link to comment
CipesDesign
Tony, this is quite interesting. I don't use those tool much so I hadn't noticed it before. This might be a bug or it might be the (who knows why?) intended behavior. But I can see how it would cause problems. One workaround might be to create your extruded poly's from the 'ground up'. Just draw the shape in plan (or the appropriate) view and then use the "extrude" command. Edited January 16, 2007 by CipesDesign Quote Link to comment
Guest
Use the 2D polygon tool to draw the shape, then extrude the shape if you need an extrude. Otherwise, the 3D polygon tool is working as designed. Quote Link to comment
Tony Totten
I have drawn dozens of 3d models in VW10 using exactly the technique you describe and without any problems. I recently upgraded to 12.5 and when i draw a 2d polygon shape in plan then use the 3d extrude tool it always makes a mesh. This is most frustrating and does not happen when the extrude rectangle tool is used. I have checked it over and over and with substantial experience in using extruded polygons i am convinced that I am not making an error. Polygons Quote Link to comment
Petri
Now I'm a bit confused: is it the Extruded Polygon tool or Extrude command? Did a quick test. VW 9, 11 and 12.5 all create meshes with the tool and extrusions with the command. Quote Link to comment
G_Hannigan
Create: 2d polygon On the Menu bar: Model menu>Extrude>Extrusion ht. Result=Extrude (not a mesh) The "Extruded Polygon Tool" will create a mesh. "when i draw a 2d polygon shape in plan then use the 3d extrude tool" Are you using a 2d polygon as a guide to use the Extruded Polygon Tool in a plan view? This will create a mesh. If you follow the above & extrude the 2d poly, you'll get an extrude. Quote Link to comment
G_Hannigan
Petri, I think we came to the same conclusion. The tool/command mismatch was the clue. I hardly ever use this tool, so this result hadn't occurred to me. The approach is OK for creating walls, no good for Tony's needs. Quote Link to comment
Guest
Tony - are you using the 2d Polygon tool and then using the Extrude command, the Extruded Polygon tool, or the 3D Polygon tool? Quote Link to comment
Vectorworks, Inc Employee Biplab Posted January 21, 2007 Vectorworks, Inc Employee Share Posted January 21, 2007 Well, it all depends upon where you snap onto using the extruded retangle tool and extruded polygon tool - both tools can create mesh objects in certain situation especially when you snap onto objects that are at different z heights.
