Creating a Mansard Roof with Dormers

John, If it is a simple roof you can form the mansard roof with the Roof Tool: http://architoshforums.forest.net/showthread.php?t=1838

If it is more complex you will have to use the Roof Face Tool.

You will probably have to model the dormers manually in both cases though. To form the holes:

- In a Roof Object use Edit Group and Paste in Place a polygon forming the hole.

- In a Roof Face use Edit Group with Paste in Place of a polygon to form the hole and then Clip Surface.

This is a little hard to explain in words.

The short answer is use two roofs.

The long answer is create the "inside" or "top" roof that is less vertical.

Trace around this roof with the polygon tool. Copy this polygon.

Create the bottom roof (either from walls or different polygon)

With the roof selected, go to Modify>Edit Group

Use Paste in Place to paste the copied polygon (footprint from first inner roof)

Click on Exit Group in the upper right corner

[This cuts a hole out of the lower level roof so the inner roof will display]

You may need to set the correct z height of the inner roof so it sits correctly on top of bottom, more vertical roof.
