If speed is an issue, forget Radiosity. Calculating light bounces (Rad), will drastically slow any renderer (Artlantis, C4D, RW etc). The time spent adjusting the parameters and rendering aren't practical if you need to work quickly.

Hello Jim:

You can separate my comments into the ones for getting the light beams to look good from the comments on how to render this model with radiosity.

Essentially the radiosity settings are turn off all objects, make the floor emit, make the figurine receive, set the detail to 2m, go!

With the lit fog and auto exposure bug this extends to turning off auto exposure (this bug appears to be fixed already for the next major release). The radiosity solution for this file takes about ten seconds this way. The lit fog is a much larger percentage of the time to render this image.
