P Retondo
I sent a VW 10.5 file to a Mac user on version 11. She can't open my file (tried sending it twice). She says it isn't highlighted in the list of files in her "open file" dialog box, with or without the .mcd extension. I haven't used a Mac in years - anyone have a clue as to what the problem might be? Quote Link to comment
P Retondo
I converted my v.10 file to a v.12, then exported it as a v.11. Then my Mac user could open it. Shouldn't a v.10 file be openable in v.11, or is cross-platform a problem? Edited April 27, 2006 by P Retondo Quote Link to comment
grant_PD
No, the version is important. If she's not getting the message that informs her of opening an older version then the file is unrecognizable. A couple of things to check: Sometimes the mail program will corrupt the file, especially if there is no file extension added. Zipping the file will protect it from mail corruption. The file browser on a mac will not highlight files that are not in it's list of file types. Opening from the File->Open menu will give you more options. Other ways of opening the file (dragging to the application icon, double clicking, etc) just won't work. Quote Link to comment
P Retondo
Grant, thanks - not a case of email corruption, since two attempts resulted in no success, but the v.11 file went through email and could be opened. Maybe it's a case of file-type recognition. In windows, file type recognition is first a function of filename extension, although the file format and possibly some embedded header information can come into play if the file extension isn't the appropriate one. For Macs, I notice that filename extensions are often optional - so where does file type recognition come from and how does one force a program to attempt to open a file? Quote Link to comment
CipesDesign
Pete, have her try the following: Drag (or save) the file to the desktop. Single click the file to select it, then go the FILE>GET INFO. In the GET INFO dialog is a scroll list entitled "OPEN WITH". Scroll the list, and if VW's is there select it as the default. If VW's isn't there, choose "OTHER", which will open another dialog. At the top is another scroll list called "enable". Change from "recommended app's" to "all app's". Now, navigate the the list to locate the VW's app. icon and select it. Click "ADD". Now, she *should* be able to open the file in the following manner: first open VW's, then go to FILE>OPEN and locate the file and open it. Once the file is opened tell her to do an immediate SAVE AS and rename (if desired). The newly SAVED file will should now behave properly, just like a native mac file. Hope that works :-) Quote Link to comment
P Retondo
Thanks, Peter. I'll give that a try. Quote Link to comment
B.Balemi
Done this several times before. Save it to the folder in youre Mac hardrive whever you want it to be. Then open from within vector works then save, the system will provide the icon recognition thinging from there. you have to open fronm within V works . Hopes this helps. Brendan Quote Link to comment
Christiaan
Grant, thanks - not a case of email corruption, since two attempts resulted in no success, but the v.11 file went through email and could be opened. I don't see how that rules out file corruption. I would try zipping it in any case. (Hopefully Peter's advice should nail it though) Quote Link to comment
P Retondo
I don't see how that rules out file corruption. Doesn't rule it out, just makes the likelihood de minimus. I'm getting more info from my v.11 user, and will report what I find out. Edited April 29, 2006 by P Retondo Quote Link to comment
Christiaan
Well you did say it's "not a case of email corruption". Quote Link to comment
