There's a known problem with xrefs that could be causing this. If you can have the file originator bind any xrefs, that might help. The last time I saw this problem, binding xrefs in AutoCAD failed.

If they're using an older version of AutoCAD, you can try temporarily removing the DWGdirect library from your VectorWorks folder and restarting VectorWorks. XRefs won't get bound, but maybe non-xrefs will import ok.

If you open the DWG file in a text editor, the first few characters should be something like AC10. If not, then the file is corrupt, or zipped, or something.
