Section-Elevation Line Tool for Elevations

emilie

Question

When using the Section-Elevation Line tool to create a building elevation, is there a way to move only the marker independently of the section cut line? I often need the section cut to sit quite close to the building face because of topography etc, but I’d like the marker shown in plan to sit farther away so it doesn’t overlap the building geometry. Ideally, it would function similarly to a Space object, where the marker itself could float independently while remaining connected to the section line. It doesn't need to be so literal for elevations.

Is there a way to make it do this?

What I do is copy the Section-Elevation line, delete it then Paste in Place. This gives me a duplicate but unlinked version that I can then move around, resize, etc. You can then link it back to the Section Viewport so that it auto-coordinates. But there should be a better system. There was a quite an in depth discussion about this a couple of years back. We should be able to do things like scale a section line without all other instances on other sheets/viewports following suit.

Thank you all for your help.  Tom, I'll try your method as a work around for now. Christian, I appreciate you submitting this!

I did a bit of reading after my post and I realized that the interior elevation tool works exactly like how I wish the section-elevation line tool would work. Perhaps some of the ideas used on that tool could be transferred over. Just a thought for the VW folks.

Another workaround is to edit the layout group and to move the geometry in it:

If the Section Elevation Line is styled as per your video then all instances of that style will be affected so you'd need to unstyle it first. But even then, if you have multiple instances of that Section Elevation Line they will all be affected by the change too + you may not want this. Really we need a way to make changes to individual instances of styled Section Elevation Lines without all other instances following suit.

There might be a partial workaround using a stepped section line with "gapped line".

Not sure if there's some tricksy way to hide the bits that mark the corners in the line steps. A messy approach would be to blank them out with white rectangles in annotations.

Using a "none" pen attribute produces this:
