Roof question (new user)

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm a new user of vectorworks (still exited about it).I'm having difficulty understanding rood styles in Vectorworks. I'm able to create a style with all the components, but I'm trying to specifically have a compostition for a roof made with prefabricated webbed truss where the insulation is resting on the gypsum. I don't understand how I should approach this.

Should I create a slab for the ceiling where I put the insulation and a gable roof style that does not include the insulation?

Is there a setting I'm not seeing in the roof-style options? Is it something to do with the attic function?

Looking forward for any tips, thanks.

I would probably approach it like this:

- Roof style comprising the tiles, membrane, sheathing + battens.

- Slab style for the ceiling comprising plaster, gypsum board + insulation.

- Truss modelled as hybrid symbol.

I've done it this way for technical sections. Can work nicely, but can also get pretty complicated if the roof is complicated.

For presentation sections (and many technical sections) I don't bother modelling the truss separately; I'd just include the top chord thickness as part of the roof object (and a Slab for the ceiling as Tom's advice, on a separate layer). Or if the roof has some degree of complexity and I want to show the roof finish meeting junctions accurately (e.g. internal gutters, skylights, etc) then I would model two roof objects on separate layers: one being the roof structure (top chord) + battens, and one being the roof finish.

The only thing for @Pat528 to watch is the interface between the Roof (top chord) + the Slab (bottom chord + insulation) as although a Wall + a Roof can interact with each other + a Slab + a Wall can interact with each other, a Slab + a Roof can't so they'll end up overlapping each other unless you manually clip the Slab using modifiers. (By interact I mean the objects can automatically clip each other or their components can extend + stop at points relative to the other object's components). But maybe overlapping is fine. Maybe you can get the top + bot chord to merge in section (in the viewport settings). But for me in this case I think I'd want the ability to show the whole truss in section (the webs), + turn it on + off independently + control its attributes independently, hence the symbol.

I definitely wouldn't use the Attic function 🙂
