HP 1220 print driver woes with happy ending

I have a HP 1220 deskjet on a network using the HP jetdirect print server. We all use VWKS 9.5.3 or 10.1.2 on Mac OS 10.2.6. The supplied driver from HP (2.1a is the latest) has always been a problem especially with large file sizes which make the printer really bog down, takes for ever to print, quits the que 1/2 way through, etc. Gets worse as the file size goes up. Hp has come out with many driver revisions but it still has problems. Anyway I thought I'd give the gimp print driver a try to see if it had the same problems. And low and behold gimp print works great ! No crashing and the speed is at least 10 times as fast on large file sizes. One 14mb VWKS file refused to print with the hp driver but gimp just ripped it and spit it out fast and with no hassles. So how is it that some guys writing software code for free put out a better product than big old HP ?
