tapered extrude question

I created a tapered extrude from a circle to make a tree trunk. I then converted it into nurbs surfaces so I can create the bends. Rather than move the vertices manually, how can I now scale the trunk ends (top and bottom) and also the mid section so that I can get the exact shape that I want?

The way I scale nurbs is to draw a square, circle or line at the point where I want and then move the vertices to coincide. Laborious because sometimes you have to do this in three steps for each vertice (x,y,z axis)I don't know if this helps but it seems to be a limit of all 3d programs beccause we are looking at a 2d sutface (the screen).
