Residential Buildings

Recommended Posts

All,

Since Vectorworks tries to be all

things to many people, is there a better process to arriving at designing/modeling Residential Structures?

If we start from scratch, the Wall Tool doesn’t natively include framing data. That has to be created via the dropdown menu. While the create Framing is neat, it just lacks foresight, IMO, from a Homebuilding perspective. The tool doesn’t allow you to create the corners that are central to how a model works like it’s real-world counterpart.

Additionally, I’m not certain that the framing tool ties directly back into the Wall tool. Does it? What if I need to modify my wall?

Here’s to hoping that in the next software release that this has received more attention and is going in the right step.

i do appreciate the inclusion of double-plates, as this is helpful in drilling down the accuracy of correct bearing height for the birds mouth!

Nope, you regenerate the framing.  This tool seems like another one of those teaser features that never came to full development.

Maybe the author was just trying to stimulate attention to be paid on one of a myriad of so-called features introduced but never actually made useful over the past decade; as the company seems to be more focused on attempting to introduce yet another inevitably partially implemented feature which it can claim as the basis to encourage its user base to continue to spend good money after bad. Maybe the company has it right, its user base may substantially only interested in producing something for show itself, not meant to be actually constructed, and thereby the proper representation of structure inclusive of framing isn't really important after all?

I'm afraid you are out of luck; the Wall Framing tool hasn't seen an update in over 20 years. So, I will not be holding my breath. We have also been waiting for stacked components in walls for over a decade now.

Exactly, I tried to run this up the flagpole last year. I find it interesting to think/feel that there are more ‘users’ of VW designing for stages than those in the Residential Construction realm.

I will add that Teaser Tuesday’s reveal of Windows & Door Combinations only lends itself to… this concept of doors/windows/walls need to be strategically aligned to wall framing data.

Just how then are we to develop a functional plan to build a digital twin?

Either you build a BIM tool, or you don’t.

No method for creating optional corner types, etc.

And I think this goes beyond Residential Construction, as I see the same issue of valid data points not crossing over from Architectural realm as well!
