Unasked for layer visibility changes..?

Hugh Chapman

Question

I'm finding that layer visibility settings sometimes change inexplicably when I move between Sheet Layers and Design Layers. I.e. some layers are on that were off and some layers are off that were on last time I was working in the design layers. I say inexplicably - perhaps there is a reason for this I don't understand.

I guess I can avoid/work around this behaviour by -

- Working through viewports on sheets rather than switching between sheet layers and design layers

- Using Saved views to 'reset' layer visibility settings when I switch back to design layers

But is there something I'm missing that would explain the disconcerting layer visibility settings I'm experiencing?

Thanks

The only thing that I can think of is that if you are going into Design Layers through the Viewport (double-clicking the Viewport, selecting Edit Design Layer), any changes you make to layer and class visibility is entirely temporary.  As soon as you leave the edit container by clicking the Return to Viewport button or using the navigation palette, all visibility will reset to before entering the Design Layer.

Otherwise, your layer and class visibility shouldn't be changing by itself while you are working on Sheet Layers.

@Hugh Chapman When do these Layer Visibility changes happen ... ?

To expand on @Jesse Cogswell comment

Have a missing item (for example) in a Sheet Layer / Viewport  ? - Go through the viewport to the Design Layer(s)- (use the Edit Viewport Dialog) - change any all Layer / Class Visibility (edit as needed) ... Set all Layers / Classes to visible if needed.

Upon return to the Viewport, class / layer visibility there, should be unchanged. (You may need to alter the Layer / Class settings for the specific Viewport in the OIP to see results of any Design Layer(s) Class edits ...)

Your use of Saved Views is a great workflow.

Set a Saved View on the Design Layer(s)  / Set one inside a Viewport while editing - Now go between the two saved views ... (Magic!)

Edit Viewport Dialog not required - Saved View settings for the Design Layer(s) do not need to match those of the Viewport. The back / forth with Saved Views is to easy when editing a design.
