tapered extrudes along a path

Recommended Posts

I know nothing about sails, but I wanted to try this and it's a good opportunity to post a picture.

Draw your mast (I lofted two circles together) then draw a polygon in the shape of the sail, extrude it 0 depth and use the convert to nurbs command to turn it into a nurbs surface.

Now change the number of vertices for U and V, then pull one of them out to put a little curve in the surface.

You don't have to extrude the shape, just use the "Create Surface From Curves" command. It will convert any 2-D object into a nurbs surface.

Lofting is the process - where you draw 2 or more cross-sections of the final shape you want and then use this tool to create a skinned surface. I believe there are examples and tutorials in the 3DPowerPack manual.
