Panorama for Meta Quest (VW 2022)

Biscontin

Question

Using VW 2022!

Hi, I am trying to export a Panorama image to be viewed on a Meta Quest 2 headset, in order to show my client the 360° view of the room.

I am using Pigasus VR Media Player to open the Panorama image on the Meta Quest 2.

The problem I have is that everything is off scale, the viewer feels much smaller than reality, and all objects are way bigger than what they should be... I feel like a ant 🙂

I have put the camera at 165cm, pointing straight... see screen-shot of the set-up.

Anyone having the same issues or anyone know how to fix this?

Also, is there any way to create a stereoscopic Panorama image?

Thanks.

Stereo Panos requires a 2-camera setup in a side-by-side [SBS] configuration, encoded to tell the viewer how to split the image for the viewer.  I don't think you can easily do it with a rendered image in VW. Getting the parallax right is tricky manually.

I tried viewing VW panos directly in the Quest Browser but it doesn't launch into immersive mode. and there aren't any controls for looking around.

I use the Skybox Media player on my Quest, it looks very similar to Pigasus. My panos look fine, so I think there may be a camera set up configuration issue on your riles??

My first guess is that you have a misalignment between the generated image's Field of View and the Playback mode FOV.  See if you have any luck with the "Surround Mode" in the Pigasus player

I also tried creating a VW Cloud Presentation, it is a little more work to set up links to other panos, but it is very effective and can be viewed in "theater mode" in the Quest browser.  ( I can send you a link via email to a sample if you like)

You may consider losing the fully rendered view and using the built-in VW viewer for Quest. The lighting is flat, but you get the full wall through experience.

Can you share your camera setup or one of the images?

Thank you Bart.

For the Stereoscopic image, I tried to export 2 panoramas moving the camera point-of-view 2"-3" aside... I will try a better result, but the main issue is the off-scale feeling.

Quest browser does not work with Panoramas, I tried that too. I download the Pigasus because a friend on mine, who uses 3D Studio, suggested it.

See screen-shot attached... and a panorama image (which is a test of a stereoscopic side-by-side).

Thanks.

I think you are close.

That eye offset for each camera is critical.

Try two cameras,

3" apart and then have them converge at 30'-0" away.

If it still looks goofy, move the camera apart by 1/2" increments.

Sample file attached, both JPG and JPS in case that makes a difference

Thank you Bart! I will try today.

What do you think about my camera set up? Do you see anything off?

And I will check your attachments in the Quest.

What is the JPS file? Is it something VW creates? I have never seen it...

JPS is a file format standard created to help stereo apps use two separate images in one file with some encoding to help the app figure out how the two images go together.

I created my win Photoshop after stacking the two panoramas on top of each other.

In the Skybox viewer, both versions ( the JPG and the JPS) behaved the same. So the JPS is not required.

Looking further into it, I don't think the camera parameters make much of a difference, those settings probably get overwritten when you export the panorama. The export only seems to use the eye height and direction to center the panorama.

So, I think fine-tuning the distance between the two cameras is likely the key. Secondly, the convergence is optional. Some folks say you should keep the cameras parallel, but I think it depends on your total focus distance.

Thank you again!

I have tried your panorama image on my Quest 2, but the scale looks a bit off... especially when I look at the stairs, they look small... or when I turn and look at the corner walls behind, they look big... do you feel the same?

Would you mind share your set of the camera used for your Panorama?

Thanks.
