site DTM rendering issue

Recommended Posts

Can anyone figure this out:    I started a simple site model, and added a texture bed for a driveway.  I attached two images.  The first one shows the site model, but the texture bed (driveway) is not visible.  (I did 'update' the site model.)  Notice the 3D style is set to "3D Extruded contours".  In the next image, I show what happens when I change the 3D style to be "3D Mesh".  I did not change anything else ... all I did was change the 3D style.   Notice in the second image, the texture bed now shows up correctly, and (curiously) the site model changes its color from green to gray.   I did not change any other setting between taking these screen shots.    Is this a bug with the software, or is my system messed up ?    Notice both renderings are in "Shaded".    Could it be that it is not supposed to be rendered in "Shaded" but only in Renderworks ?      I'm using VW 2024 on a new Mac Mini with MacOS 15.3.1 Sequoia.

PS:  I moved this post over from the 'troubleshooting' forum because it doesn't seem as busy

@domer1322, there is a bug regarding textures on the site model in 3D extruded contours mode. We've filed a Jira on this, and it will be fixed as soon as the engineers have time. Note that even when ficed, the texture won't be applied to the vertical element of the 'cardboard layers'. It will only be applied on the horizontal parts.

Meanwhile, can you either move to a different mode for the site model, or you can use the draped mode for the hardscape.

thanks for saving me time from tearing my hair out about this ... I always figure when something doesn't work, it must be my fault.   However ... you said that you filed a "Jira" and it might be fixed ... but I'm running a perpetual license with VW 2024.  Will this be fixed for VW 2024,  or only VW 2025 ?  (I am running update 8 for VW 2024).

Does this problem exist in VW 2023 ?      in  VW 2022 ?      I skipped a few versions when I updated to VW 2024.  Can I assume that I can download these older version if I must ?

The issue stems from when the site model had a huge rework, so I believe in the 2023 version. And this is the first time we have had this reported, so it's not a very common workflow combination 🙂. I can't promise when it will be fixed, but the engineers will do their best to get it working.

However, the fix will be focused on 2025 in the first hand.

I wouldn't recommend to go back to 2022 for this specific function, as you'll loose the new site model functionality, which is much more worth than the ability to use texture on this specific site model mode.

If you supply some more information, I'm happy to help you find workarounds until this bug is fixed.

Jeff:

thanks for tidbit ... but can you be more specific.....  do you mean adding a google earth satellite image as a texture to the DTM, then turning it off?

One attempt I made to fix this had partial success.  I exported the file from VW 2024 into VW 2021.  I ran it on an older Mac High Sierra.  Then I saved it, then opened it on my newer Mac in VW 2024.  It allowed the site model to return to the green color instead of the gray, but still has the same texture bed issue.  At least now I can control the site model overall texture (grass, sand, asphalt, etc ....)  Since I can see the texture beds using "3D Mesh"  I'll just push through this annoyance (but still hope VW will fix it for VW 2024).   I like using the '3D extruded contours' because I can more easily see the slopes and elevation changes.
