Door threshold extensions

Anna M.

Question

I'm struggling to get the threshold to extend past the door frame. It doesn't matter what value I put into the extension box it just stays in line with the door leaf, despite me unticking the 'threshold under leaf' box.

Can anyone let me know what I'm missing?

Thank you

I can't see any reason why this isn't working. All I can think of is that it is to do with the interior/exterior side of the Door + that the extensions have been applied, just to the other side of the door. Check the 'Interior Side' parameter in the OIP or the blue-arrow-in-a-square thing in Top/Plan. Or try adding a value to the 'Interior Extension' for the Threshold.

Ok then next thing I'd try is to pull the Door out of the Wall + see whether it works when not in a Wall. Do you have Wall Closures applied + is it anything to do with them...?

Feel free to post a file as clutching at straws now. What version of VW is this? There were some sill-related bugs in VW2025 but I've lost track of where we are with them.

Hi Anna, Hi Tom,

Yes, I was able to obtain the threshold extensions only when the door was pulled out of the wall. To model the door with them inserted to the wall I created a symbol including the door. Then set its options to insert into walls, obviously requiring a 3D wall hole component.

Over the years I've struggled with the theshold/sill settings for doors/windows. And there's been a debate here in the past about how VWX is not friendly to the normal arrangement, here in the UK,  of interior sills and the sill of the window frame itself. I have tended to model both cill separately.

Incidentally the image below gave me the exterior experience I want, but with an irregular deep inside extension (outer to inner direction). That's because the threshold-taper I want, from nosing back to face of frame, seems to be a function of overall sill width. Ideally the offset setting (or a new setting) would control this. But the offset value is relative to the frame and so doesn't help...

...on a philosophical note:- You can argue door-sets with wooden sills are a contemporary innovation. Traditionally, around these parts (Macclesfield), the sill is part of the wall or planted on it. A stone step, steel weather bar set in concrete, or the famous (?) Macclesfield Sill! And the frame-jambs of the three-member frame are screw fixed into the wall.

Stucco on the exterior of wood framed walls became very common within tract homes in Southern California after World War II.

At door and window openings, these homes have stucco mold on the sides and across the top, with the exterior face of the stucco mold being flush with the exterior face of the stucco. Now the exterior wooden door & window sills have ears that extend at least to the outer edge of this stucco mold, and the nosing of these sills protrude outward past the exterior face of the stucco. The PHOTO BELOW, shows what is described in this paragraph. The picture was of an exterior door of a home probably built around the 1960’s

Attached you will find a file showing how I got it to DISPLAY more along the lines of what I want. BUT, I had to use a backwards way to get it to do this. I haven’t taken time to look at this file in a long time, but as I recall, the way I did it is by making the outside of the door set as the inside face of the wall - or something as to that effect. Not a workaround that I would want to use.

With So Cal being the second most populous part of the U.S., and millions upon millions of homes using this detail, you would hope that the door tool would work in a manner showing how most exterior doors in the area were actually built.

I called VW tech support and requested this ability for the door tool back in December 2023 and have the emails regarding this request. The diagram with the red, is showing the solution that VW tech support came up with. A door outside the wall with a sill that only extended to the width of the door.

I tried to edit the post above and add the picture below, but this forum wouldn't allow for any editing.

It is possible to make the door part of the wall, as shown in the file above. SEE THE PICTURE BELOW

BUT, I used  a backwards way of doing it, and I would not go about it this way, because it was such a convoluted technique

I agree with @thinkingpencil. The Door Tool is "not friendly", or put another way, it can certainly be improved upon.
