Enzo Vernusse
Hello everyone, I'm trying to import an MVR file that was sent to me, but I'm encountering an issue: The fixtures do not appear visually in my workspace. However, they are listed in the Patch. I can also see that GDTF fixtures have been imported and appear in the Resource Manager. I assume there is a process similar to grandMA3 or Depence, where you need to replace GDTF fixtures with those from the Vectorworks database. I tried using the "Find and Modify" function, but I couldn’t find a solution. Does anyone know the correct procedure to fix this issue? Thanks in advance for your help! Quote Link to comment
Vectorworks, Inc Employee klinzey Posted March 5 Vectorworks, Inc Employee Share Posted March 5 Assuming they are complete GDTF file that include geometry, make sure the option to "Use GDTF Geometry" is checked in the OIP of the lighting device. If the GDTF symbol shows a preview of the device in the Resource Manager then checking the option should use geometry provided by the GDTF file. Some applications don't actually export real GDTF files, they export proxy GDTF files that contain no real data. If they are no complete GDTF, then yes, you should use Find and Modify to add the Vectorworks symbol as you have shown above. Quote Link to comment
Enzo Vernusse
Thank you for your response! The issue is that I cannot select any fixtures in the workspace, so I don’t have access to the OIP (Object Info Palette) to check the "Use GDTF Geometry" option. I am attaching a screenshot of my Resource Manager to show what I see on my end. Let me know if this helps diagnose the issue! Thanks again for your help. Quote Link to comment

Vectorworks, Inc Employee jcogdell Posted March 6 Vectorworks, Inc Employee Share Posted March 6 Hi @Enzo Vernusse I've had a look through the MVR, the basic problem is that none of the GDTF's included in the MVR are valid/complete. They're all placeholders without any data or geometry in them. Another issue is that none of them have associated fixture id numbers in the MVR which means the only way to identify which fixture is which is throught the DMX address. You can still convert these into Vectorworks lighting devices, use the replace lighting device button in the OIP straight after you have imported the MVR, this will atleast provide some geometry to work with. The main problem is that you will still need to figure out which fixtures are which since they will all be converted into the same type of light. However this will preservce the DMX addresses and the the fixture locations. From the looks of things this ahs come from Capture, I'm not very familiar with their MVR export process so it may be worth reaching out to them to ask if there is a solution in Capture to get the design to export correctly. Mike Wright
I have found when importing MVR files that you need to import them twice. It always seems that the fixtures appear on the second import with 'update existing objects only' ticked. 1 Quote Link to comment
Mike Wright
secondary to this, even after that process the fixtures do not have correct geometry and I have to use 'replace lighting device' to correct this Quote Link to comment
Vectorworks, Inc Employee jcogdell Posted March 11 Vectorworks, Inc Employee Share Posted March 11 @Mike Wright Can you send me a copy of the MVR file you are having issues with? Quote Link to comment
Vectorworks, Inc Employee jcogdell Posted March 17 Vectorworks, Inc Employee Share Posted March 17 I did some more investigating and found some more info that is relavent to this topic. There is another way to get the fixtures to display in @Enzo Vernusse file. When the MVR is first imported and the fixtures are all actively selected turn off the use GDTF geometry check box in the OIP. This should cause all the fixtures to display as a default bounding box. Now you should be able to use the select lighting devices by instrument type right click context command to select all the fixtures of one type and then in the oip use the replace lighting devices button to select the correct Spotlight symbol. then repeat for each fixture type as needed.
