Cory W.
In the attached file there are (2) 3D Polygons. The blue one I can select and extrude. The red one I cannot. What's different between these objects? 3D POLY EXTRUDE.vwx Quote Link to comment
Jonathan Pickup
3D Polygons should not be able to be extruded. Did you know there are several 3D red polygons? 1 Quote Link to comment
markdd
3D polylines can be "extruded" using the Push/Pull tool as long as the geometry is planar. Without digging into the geometry too deeply, I suspect that the Red Polygons are not quite Planar, hence the problem you see here. Try converting them to NURBS Surfaces using the Create Surface from Curves command and then have another try. You should have better luck. Edited February 2 by markdd 1 Quote Link to comment
VIRTUALENVIRONS
You can also select the polygon, choose "create surface from curves" in the 3D power pack. Then you can use "shell tool" to extrude forward or backward. 1 Quote Link to comment
Cory W.
Thanks everyone. I believe understand what's going on. But I'm going to try to duplicate and record/upload my process for reference. Quote Link to comment
VIRTUALENVIRONS
Hi Cory, Have a look at this first before making your own recording. BTW, the red polygon has many interactions in the same plane. 1 Quote Link to comment
markdd
As I said in my earlier post, the reason why the 3D polygon is not extruding is because it is not perfectly planar. Here is a short video explaining and proving the issue. 2 Quote Link to comment
VIRTUALENVIRONS
Yes, the polygon is not flat. I did not mention this method earlier. Although it is much faster, almost immediate, if you don't work with points, a little confusing. 1 Quote Link to comment
Tobias Kern
Hey, if you have a non-flat 3D-Polygon (or Nurbs-Surface, Nurbs-Curve) you can scale it with the 3D-Dragger in Edit-Mode to factor = 0 (zero) to flatten it. Cory W.
Wow! You guys are great! On 2/2/2025 at 3:02 PM, Jonathan Pickup said: 3D Polygons should not be able to be extruded. Did you know there are several 3D red polygons? Btw Jonathan (and others), I have zero idea how that red polygon has multiple copies. No doubt, user error. Thanks for pointing it out, though. Cory W.
Thanks everyone! These tutorials have served as a huge help in understanding what the issue was, how to fix it, and how to work around it if needed. Thanks again! Quote Link to comment
