Ted, unfortunately the FILLS are part of the OS and cannot be made tranparent. On the other hand HATCHES can be made transparent quite easily by unchecking the "background fill" box. Additionally, new in version 12 (Mac OS only!) is the ability to adjust the transparency of an entire layer, which would be very useful for this purpose.
