Window appearance on plan (without a sill!)

Ioannis.K

Question

Hi,

Given all the issues to do with window sills, we decided to exclude them from our window types for now. However we don't seem to get the windows to show correctly on plan , as the exclusion of the sill objects seem to make the sill on plan see-through i.e. there is no solid fill to use below windows so they can hide whatever lies below them. Screenshot below for reference.

I did go through settings of window style and plug-in object but couldn't find the answer.

Any ideas?

I'm not sure there is anything you can do about this as far as the Window settings are concerned. I use a Sill 90% of the time + when I don't I am inserting my own custom sill so am not facing this issue very often but I remember one time I did I ended up applying a Data Vis to the Walls underneath so they displayed with a solid white fill so it looked correct...

What were the issues you were having with Sills that made you stop using them?

Thank you for the response, it is helpful and it could be that I go with your 10% of the time solution...

The main problem I have with the sills is that they use the wall core component to set themselves out. In my case the wall component is the orange area (insulating hollow clay blocks), which is most part of the wall. The sills take the inner or the outer face of that component as a reference point, which in my case throws out a few problems... I tried with different settings, but had no luck. Saying this I won't be surprised if deep inside those settings there is a solution.

Many thanks again.

Thank you. I did and I also went here:

https://www.vectorworks.net/en-US/public-roadmap

found it in VWX road map and gave feedback.

Would be nice to have a time frame from a Vectorworks employee, not sure how to tag this..

Calling @Matt Panzer... 🙂

Sill improvements are certainly on our radar but I'm not sure on time frame.  We're currently working on a large complex project and, once that's complete, we'd like to attack some of the smaller long standing requests like this.  I wish I had more to say but that's all I know at the moment. 🙂

So many of the projects you've been involved with have been huge improvements to the software, and as always I appreciate your expertise. 🙌

Simultaneously, I feel like we've heard this exact same sentence (from various folks) for at least a decade in terms of why the 2D representation of windows/doors can't be made to work better. There's always some other thing being fixed first. I just want a basic 2D door and a basic 2D window drawn following entertainment industry conventions, but neither is possible without inefficient workarounds (see VE-105502 and VE-105503... which might seem like small requests but are the bread and butter of set design).

Not venting at you Matt, just the realities of software development. I'm sure these things will be addressed in time, I just hope I haven't retired by then, or replaced by AI 😆

I knew that praise up front had something else coming. 😉

...and I agree that this happens often but I do my best to sprinkle in these smaller (but very important) requests in where possible.

I get it and (believe it or not) I actually read over both of those VE's last week.

As you noted, our team has been involved in a number of large projects and, while there are others currently being planned, we do want to focus some of our team on these types of improvements.
