Midpoint snapping

Jack Wallington

Question

When I used to draw a rectangle, and then draw lines across the midpoints, I could then draw lines in the middle of the resulting squares - VW would keep identifying the midpoints.

But since upgrading to 2025 this isn't happening anymore, is there a way of turning this back on?

Is there a guide to all of the changes in 2025? Thank you.

@Jack Wallington also ... Midpoint setting - see attached

Object Snaps / Midpoint = on the geometry

Smart Point Snaps / Between = (...with the T key) is Midpoint on an extension line out in space.  To get the Midpoint on an extension line, both settings are needed.

(FYI - In VWs never ending quest to look like another CAD application, we find upgrades have items that were on, turned off,  and vice versa ...  at least these settings are still there !)

Check the Smart Snap Point settings especially the one with the arrow in the screen shot.

I don't believe there is a document that lists every single change in 2025. Nor even one that lists most of the changes.

Thanks Pat, it doesn't seem to be working for me unfortunately - I'll keep plodding on.

It's frustrating how little guidance there is as standard on Vectorworks, I'm persevering because so many people rate the software and I can see the win once I get used to everything, just a very bad user experience for new people.

Thanks Peter, I can't seem to get it to work, I'll keep playing.

I wish there were better documentation for VW as a newbie. I'm plodding on with their course at the moment.

But I don't think there have been any changes to snapping behaviour.

I'm not 100% sure what you mean by this

Post screen shots of your snapping options and/or a screen movie showing what you are trying to do and we would not have to guess so much as to the problem.

Is it possible that you have snapping suspended? When you hover over the corner of a rectangle, what do you see happening? Do you get the red snap boxes showing?

Hi all, sorry for the slow reply. I've attached a screen shot. You can hopefully see I have:

- created a rectangle

- drawn lines off the midpoints

- gone to draw a line of the next mid point from that new shape

but it's not showing the midpoint - now I feel like I'm going mad and it never did this, but I'm pretty sure it did!

Have you tried setting your Snap to Distance settings to this:

And do you have the Smart Points Snap turned on?

Thanks both - I'm starting to think I'm imagining Vectorworks having done what I'm thinking of. Where it keeps marking the centre point infinitely. E.g. if you keep drawing rectangles within rectangles.

I guess it makes sense it doesn't do this because the line tool over a rectangle isn't actually attached to the original shape until I do something with Add or Clip, so the original shape hasn't actually changed? It just has a line over it, so how can it then know the middle between the line and the edge of the rectangle.

Anyway, I'll stop wasting all of your time on this - thank you again for all of your help trying to help me figure it out.

It does what you want if you set 25% snap distance:

Thanks Tom, I meant to say, I did try that and you're right it does then allow for those 25% points, but it's still not doing what I was thinking, where I draw a line at the midpoint, and then it creates two new midpoints, and so on if I kept going dividing them all up. But it is useful know I can at least divide something into quarters like this, thank you.
