Point cloud not displaying

rudybeuc@gmail.com

Question

So I'm working in 2025 on my new machine.

I've got my main window pain open and a floating pane. I import a point cloud.

That point cloud displays in plan only in the window pain I dragged and dropped it into. It disappears when going into 3d mode. It still appears correctly in the floating window pane.

Not until I try a renderworks display mode does it reappear in 3d.

What gives now?

Thanks,

Rudy Beuc

Ah!  a video. I thought you were trying to post the point cloud.  MS offers scripts to convert mkv frames to ply, hence my confusion.  I see the video (and could actually have converted it. Duh!), but no obvious solution comes to mind. Some multi screen conflict?  If you post the point cloud that might help others diagnose.

When I saw the floating window I also thought about that.

Or a general GPU or GPU driver issue,

So probably the dedicated GPU is not yet explicitly assigned to VW and Windows will use an onboard CPU graphic solution for energy saving.

If it is about the Dell Precision 3680 in your signature .... looks like that has an integrated graphic, beside an optional Nvidia.

In this case it would be good to also download the current driver from Nvidia website and not use any update options from Dell or Windows update.

Than VW App should be added to Nvidia driver and allowed to use full power.

Beside that I am currently also seeing very strange VW 2025 behaviors since latest SP 2.1.

Issues with Undos moving may drawing view to nirwana, not respecting class visibilities, failing to display pasted geometry, not offering snapping points in some situations, .....

(And later VW 2025 took us the Updater ALT Option to downgrade to an earlier SP)

I have had a similar problem with a point cloud using single window pane.

Try temporarily changing the point cloud color mode from color to grayscale and then switching back to color. This resets the 3d render info and allows the point cloud to show up in a shaded view.

While I  haven't had time to submit I think the software has a bug.

This Machine is brand new, about a week old now. Nvidia card 16 gig, windows 11, I9 1400, 32 gig ram.

I'd share the point cloud, but this page dosen't allow me to load the *.pts file generated by Nomad.

Thanks,

When certain file types are not allowed to upload, a workaround is to compress them to ZIP, which is allowed.

Sounds like a great machine.

But in case if it is really a GPU issue and not just a VW or File issue .... that may not help.

If it is configured in a way that Windows directs VW to the i9 onboard GPU and the Nvidia is idling instead or if Windows energy saving settings limit GPUs power consumption. Which is AFAIK the default. Or if Dell delivers an installation with (their tested/certified ?) Nvidia driver version which may be limited or older and VW does not like it for some reasons. Same happens for GPU driver updates delivered by Windows update. VW recommends to download GPU drivers directly from the GPU vendor site and there were also some recommendations of which driver features should be activated or avoided.

I only found this old KB thread from 2016.

Maybe there was a newer version on the german forum (?)

I get this problem a lot where a point cloud disappears.

The point cloud is there but won't display - meaning I can select it but can't see it.

My best guess is it's a caching issue since refreshing the view tends to bring it back.

My workaround is to select the hidden cloud (which I find is still selectable even though not visible)

Once selected - in the OIP - choose the 'set custom color' button.

It takes a moment to activate and then applies a height-based recoloring of the points.

I accept the defaults, and then the cloud will display.

I prefer the colorized or intensity view of the point cloud as it shows on import - but this allows me to keep working.
