I need the ability to place data tags on symbol components in viewports where symbols were placed on layers then the VP was created.

I have viewports that were created on design layers with symbols that have my Part ID data records attached. I need to be able to annotate the VP to place my Part ID data tags on the parts, but VW can't do that because the parts are in a symbol. This is sad and defeats the purpose of properly annotating a VP. I can convert the symbol on the design layer, then I can apply the data tags in the VP, but that defeats the purpose of having the symbol.

There is an explanation here as to why you can't tag objects inside of symbols + why that functionality is unlikely to be available any time soon (unfortunately):

 

In the meantime @Bruce Kieffer would placing the Data Tags inside the symbol (+ controlling their visibility in the VP by class) be a workable alternative...?

That is what I am doing, but it's WAY more work than if I could place them in the VP. Being able to scale the Data Tag text helps.

Ah ok. I thought when you said convert the symbol on the design layer you were command-K-ing them.

 

The other thing I do is to combine multiple 'normal' symbols in a single blue Group symbol, then I can tag the inner symbols in VPs.

 

But none of this takes away from the fact that as per the thread I linked, I totally agree with you that it would be great if Data Tags could 'see' objects inside of symbols. Especially now we have subpart mode for PIOs.

With every new version, I keep hoping for the ability to use data tags with symbols.
